Sol LeWitt’s studio had a lot of his character in it – it was meticulously clean – except where it was messy. I thought one of his best made pieces was an accident. He had shoes he’d wear in the studio just for painting, and when little bits of gauche dripped off the paper on the wall, it left tiny multicolored dots on just the tips of his shoes. It was really lovely. You’re right that he “succeeded in working in a plurality of styles and methods.”
